My Story

From the early days of beginning to read, I have been fascinated with books and language. Words became my passion and career.

My early experience includes travel, newsletter, and newspaper writing and those years evolved into editing and publishing. For a number of years, I worked within traditional publishing houses, doing acquisition and editing,

In the early 1990s, I met an author, Susan Butruille, not realizing that I would become her publisher and we would become lifelong friends. Susan had a manuscript, Women's Voices from the Oregon Trail. It had to be published no later than January, 1993 (the Oregon Trail Sesquicentennial), for marketing purposes. Traditional publishing schedules are set in stone years in advance, and as good as the book was, no publisher would even consider it. Susan approached me, and after much discussion with my husband, we founded Tamarack Books, Inc. and published Susan's book. In January, 1993, we sold 400 books and were thrilled. The next month we sold 4,000 and that book was off and running. Susan and I had a regional bestseller on our hands for years.

During its lifetime, Tamarack published 10-12 books a year. In addition, we had a large number of requests for book production, so founded a second company, Towanda, Inc., which helped authors to self-publish. (Remember, this was before Amazon developed their self-publishing platform.)

What do I do now? I edit books and I write books. With my Border Collie, Daisy Do, we compete in Agility and perform with the Dancing Dogs of Boise at care homes.

That is my story in a nutshell. I sincerely would like to share my knowledge and experience as well as that of other writers with you. You should not have to reinvent the process--here is a place to learn. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments that you may have.

Write the best that you can,

Kathy
